Daphne L. Alston, founder of Moms & Dads of Murdered Children United, was born in 1959 and raised in the close knit Turner Station community in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated from Dundalk Senior High School and later attended Morgan State University.

In 1981 she married Robert M. Alston and began a family in an Essex Maryland community. In 2008, she and her family, two boys and one girl moved to Edgewood Maryland.

On July 14, 2008, she received a call that would change her life forever. Police called to inform her that her son, Tarik Sharif Alston, had been fatally shot and killed while on his cell phone talking to his girlfriend at a teenage party. The murderer has never been identified.

Today she speaks for people who cannot speak for themselves. She believes that it takes a village to raise a child and is adamant about, “reclaiming our communities and investing in our children as previous generations have done.”
